Meet Our Members: Vita Vazquez
Tell me about yourself. What is your background and how did you get involved with wholesale lumber?
I’m a mother to three amazing kids, and I enjoy hiking, watching sports, reading, and staying active. After graduating college, I never imagined that I would end up in the lumber industry, but I am going on my ninth year with Boise Cascade. It’s been a wild ride! I’ve had the opportunity to learn about all the products in the building industry, experience international sales and logistics, lead various marketing projects, and build great relationships.
What motivates you to continue on this career path and be a part of the wholesale lumber industry?
Being a part of a great company that cares for its employees and gives back to the community is a big part of why I stay in this industry. I also enjoy learning, growing, being part of a team, and collaborating with others within and outside of my organization. This industry offers all of this!
In what ways have you seen the lumber industry evolve over the years?
Since I joined the industry, it has evolved immensely. Before COVID, one never would have guessed that the industry would adapt to working from home. Surprisingly, this industry adapted well and flourished. Even after COVID, many companies in the industry have pursued a hybrid schedule. We’re doing business in ways we didn’t think were possible.
What has been the most rewarding part of your career so far? Are there any “wow” moments that particularly stand out to you?
There have been many rewarding parts in my career, but the most recent one has been helping lead our DEI efforts. I have had the opportunity to help lead the Cultures United Business Inclusion Group at Boise Cascade. This experience has allowed me to learn about other perspectives and better understand why equity is so important. It’s helping me be a better person and an inclusive leader.
My “wow” moments happen every time I see how incredible our customers are. They give back to their communities, are a pleasure to work with, and really care about the industry.
Tell me about your involvement with NAWLA. How long have you been a member and what made you want to join?
I became a member when I joined Boise Cascade in 2015. My manager at the time encouraged me to take the Wood Basics course offered through NAWLA so I could learn more about the industry. I’m thankful for his persistence because the class taught me so much about the industry. In 2019, I attended my first NAWLA Traders Market and have been attending ever since. I’m now a member of the Young Emerging Lumber Professional (YELP) class and I look forward to staying involved.
What advice would you give to a new NAWLA member?
Take advantage of the education courses NAWLA offers and get involved. It’s a great opportunity to network and learn from those who have been in this industry for a long time.
What’s been your favorite NAWLA moment?
My favorite NAWLA moment was being a member of the 2023 YELP class because it allowed me to attend many educational sessions. I learned so many great things and met some amazing individuals. Most recently, we were each assigned a mentor. I’m so excited to learn from him because he has been in the industry for over 30 years.
