Meet Our Members: Alex Staalner

Alex Staalner has been closely connected to the lumber industry throughout his life, but he never anticipated pursuing a career within it. A conversation with one of his father's old colleagues sparked an interest, and Alex decided to start a career in the industry, where he has been with Brookhuis America Inc. since. In this member spotlight, learn about how Alex got his start in the industry, how he has seen the industry change over the years, and his favorite NAWLA moment.

Tell me about yourself. What is your background and how did you get involved with wholesale lumber?

My father has been in the business since the early 1980s, so I grew up close to the industry. However, I never thought the lumber industry was where I would end up. In 2016 I was helping my father set up his booth at IWF and ran into an old colleague of his.  This sparked a conversation and since I was about to get married and had just bought a house, I was motivated to start a career.

What motivates you to continue on this career path and be a part of the wholesale lumber industry?

I truly enjoy the people in this business.  So many relationships start as professional ones but turn into lifelong personal and professional friendships.  Even though so many of us are competitors, we can lean on one another during hard times.

In what ways have you seen the lumber industry evolve over the years?

The two biggest changes/evolutions that I have seen are technology and the age of the workforce.  Most would understand the technological changes, but the age demographic has been a big challenge.  We are in a unique position where there are several generations working in the industry. Everyone does things differently and has different methods of communicating.

What has been the most rewarding part of your career so far? Are there any “wow” moments that particularly stand out to you?

The first time I completed a project from start to finish sticks out as a milestone to me. This was the first project that was completely “mine,” from the initial contact with the customer, through the sales process, and finally to installation and following up. I proved to myself that I could do the job from start to finish. Being chosen in 2021 by Woodworking Network as one of the 40 under 40 was really cool and I was excited to receive the recognition from the industry and my colleagues.

Tell me about your involvement with NAWLA. How long have you been a member and what made you want to join?

My company joined NAWLA in 2023 which was also the year of our first NAWLA event at the 2023 Traders Market. I don’t know how or why we weren’t members earlier, but we joined because many colleagues kept telling us it was the place to be.

What advice would you give to a new NAWLA member?

Don’t be afraid to ask for an introduction or information from the membership.  In my experience, as long as the ask is reasonable there is someone around who is willing to help.

What’s been your favorite NAWLA moment?

The 2023 Traders Market was my first NAWLA event and was an eye-opener.  I immediately understood why people kept mentioning NAWLA. I am looking forward to attending many events in upcoming years.
